Hackers Steal Data from Millions of UK Airport Customers

Major Data Breach at UK Airports 🚨

Three major UK airports have been affected by a cyber security incident where criminal hackers accessed the data of almost nine million people and demanded a ransom. Manchester Airports Group (MAG), which owns Manchester, East Midlands, and London Stansted airports, reported that customers’ contact details, vehicle registrations, and postcodes were compromised over the weekend.

MAG stated that they refused to pay the ransom demanded by the hackers, although the amount was not disclosed. Importantly, they assured that passenger safety and aviation security were not compromised, and the hacked system did not contain customers’ bank or payment details.

The breach involved approximately 8.7 million customers, primarily affecting customer email addresses linked to WiFi sign-ups within the airports’ terminals. More sensitive data, including vehicle registrations, was accessed from individuals booking car-park spaces, arranging lounge access, and fast-track services.

MAG became aware of the hack on Tuesday and promptly took action to prevent further access, notifying affected customers. They are collaborating with specialist advisors and relevant authorities to manage the situation. The Information Commissioner’s Office is currently assessing the incident.

Customers are advised to remain vigilant against suspicious emails, texts, or phone calls and to avoid opening unknown attachments. One affected customer, Michael Goddard, expressed his concerns about the breach, stating, “To find your personal info has been stolen - it is alarming.”
