What Happened?

A single visit to a malicious website could turn Adobe’s Acrobat Chrome browser extension into a silent spy on your WhatsApp Web conversations. This exploit affected devices across all platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS. Importantly, the vulnerability did not exploit a bug in WhatsApp itself and did not require malware or stolen credentials.

Conditions for Exploitation

The vulnerability required three specific conditions to be met:

• The user must be using Google Chrome or another Chromium-based browser compatible with Chrome extensions.
• The vulnerable Adobe Acrobat PDF extension must be installed and enabled.
• At least one WhatsApp Web tab must be open when visiting the malicious site.

If these conditions were satisfied, attackers could gain access to your WhatsApp chat list, contact names, profile name, messages, and the contents of any open conversation.

How It Works

HermeticReader bypassed the browser’s same-origin protections through the Adobe extension’s privileged context. This means that the extension operated with much higher privileges than a normal website, allowing it to access private data across different sites.

Adobe’s Response

Adobe has fixed this vulnerability in version 26.5.2.3 of the Acrobat PDF extension. Users are encouraged to check that they are running the latest version, as versions 26.5.2.2 and earlier are still vulnerable.
