New figures have revealed that cybercrime victims lose an average of $9,468 in each incident, highlighting the scale of this growing global issue. According to a report from Comparitech, 130.9 million people are affected each year, leading to an annual global toll of just over $1.24 trillion. A previous study from December 2023 indicated that the average loss per victim was $8,069, affecting 88.5 million people and resulting in total losses of $714 billion. This trend shows a worrying mix of illegal activities that continue to escalate.

The United States remains a prime target for cybercriminals, with 6.7 million victims suffering losses of $138.9 billion, averaging around $20,731 per victim—more than double the global average. In contrast, countries like Spain, France, Sweden, and Turkey report average losses of about $10,000 per victim. Interestingly, India has the highest number of scam victims worldwide, with 18.8 million victims, although its average loss per victim is significantly lower at around $835.

Moreover, China, with 1.2 million victims, has reported losses of approximately $11.5 billion, aligning with global estimates by Comparitech.

Comparitech’s figure of $1.24 trillion is considered conservative, as it only accounts for victim losses. Experts predict that the global cost could reach $10.5 trillion by 2025, describing this as the greatest transfer of economic wealth in history. Comparitech’s findings provide a sobering reality: if these estimates are compared to the GDP of entire countries, the impact of cybercrime would rank 20th in the world.
