Major Data Breach at AI Music Platform Suno 🚨

A data breach at the AI music generator platform Suno has exposed over 55 million user accounts! This alarming news comes from Troy Hunt’s Have I Been Pwned service, which has confirmed the scale of the breach for the first time since it was reported last week.

The leaked data primarily consists of email addresses, but it also includes phone numbers for users who registered with them. Additionally, tens of thousands of Stripe records were revealed, containing sensitive information such as names, physical addresses, purchase amounts, and partial credit card details, including card type, expiry date, and the last four digits of the card number.

The individual responsible for the breach has also provided source code from 2023 and 2024, claiming it demonstrates that Suno scraped millions of songs and lyrics from platforms like YouTube Music, Deezer, and Genius to train its AI. While Suno has acknowledged using publicly available music for training, they argue that this practice constitutes fair use. Unfortunately, they did not respond to The Register’s request for comment.

The ethical implications of AI’s role in the arts have been a hot topic for years. Major record labels had previously raised concerns about mass data scraping and copyright infringement by AI companies before Suno’s breach, leading to a lawsuit in 2024 against Suno and rival Udio for allegedly scraping songs without permission from copyright holders. Notable plaintiffs included Sony Music Entertainment, UMG Recordings, and Warner Records, representing artists like Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Dua Lipa.
