U.S. Judiciary confirms breach of court electronic records service

The U.S. Federal Judiciary has officially confirmed that its electronic case management systems (CM/ECF and PACER) were targeted by a “sophisticated and persistent” cyberattack. This statement came in response to a Politico report that claimed a breach had occurred on the U.S. Court system’s case management system, exposing sensitive information, including the identities of confidential informants.

According to anonymous sources, the breach impacted multiple federal districts, directly affecting CM/ECF and PACER, which is the backbone of federal court document management. The Judiciary became aware of the full severity of the incident on July 4, 2025, and a related briefing followed without making any public announcements about it.
