One of the world’s best-known cybercrime groups has announced a significant development in its ongoing rivalry. On Sunday, ShinyHunters, a notorious digital extortion group recognized for its aggressive data theft campaigns, claimed to have hijacked the dark web site of its chief rival, cl0p. This incident has brought a long-simmering feud into the public eye.

ShinyHunters reported that they broke into cl0p’s dark web site on Friday after discovering a vulnerability in cl0p’s software, allowing them to gain extensive control over the rival’s infrastructure. In an online chat with Reuters, ShinyHunters boldly stated, “We basically own them now.”

When Reuters attempted to access cl0p’s dark web site on Sunday, it was unreachable. However, a screenshot preserved by cybercrime research platform eCrime.ch showed that the site displayed the message, “Domain Seized By ShinyHunters” on Saturday.

Two cybersecurity experts confirmed the authenticity of this clash. Brandon Parsons, a threat intelligence manager at Minnesota-based Ascent Solutions, remarked, “Street beefs on the dark web are a real thing.” Joe Roosen, senior director of security research at Texas-based SpyCloud, noted that he had never witnessed one cybercrime group confronting another so openly, calling it a rare twist in the cybercrime landscape.

ShinyHunters has been at odds with cl0p over the alleged theft of a software exploit last year, which took advantage of a then-unknown flaw in Oracle’s E-Business Suite (EBS).
