Join us on a deep dive into an electronic detection and response system deployed by China’s security agencies to prevent the leakage of confidential documents from government workstations. The tool, especially developed for government Windows workstations, enables a digital Panopticon for government employees that keeps close track of their activities, data use and spies on their web behavior. It lets supervisors know if individuals are trying to store or “extract” classified documents.
As we can’t have full access to a working system or source code, all our findings can be merely considered scraping at the surface.
The system we found is from August 2019 according to some timestamps, and most likely by 2026 the methods of such products have tremendously improved in sophistication and robustness. Interestingly though, after reaching out to the designer SuperRed to inquire about this program and its wider functionality, we noticed that the unsecured download location was quickly taken down.
